| PLAYCENTRE CELEBRATES IN CAPITAL’S CENTRE | | 6th Mar 2010 | | by Jude Pointon | | email : pointons@gmail.com | Wellington region’s Playcentres are taking family-fun to the heart of the capital on March 24th when Civic Square becomes a play zone to celebrate Playcentre Awareness Week.
From March 21-27th about 11,000 Playcentre families and 16,000 children at almost 500 Playcentres throughout the country will celebrate ‘Whānau tupu ngātahi - families growing together’. The Wellington region’s 21 Playcentres, from Miramar to Otaki, will be holding open days, community picnics, fundraising walks, joint early childhood education sports sessions and art displays.
Wellington Playcentre Association Public Relations Team convenor Jude Pointon says Playcentre families are looking forward to sharing their early childhood option in a new environment.
“Everyone is invited to come down, 9.30am-12.30pm on March 24th (with a rain-off day of March 25th), to share in the fun, learning and sense of community Playcentre babies to six year olds and their families regularly experience.” As many as possible of Playcentre’s 16 areas of play, plus some fun extras, will be relocated to Civic Square.
“Playcentre began in Karori, Wellington as a family co-operative over 60 years ago. The concept has been exported to Japan which now has eight Playcentres mostly in and around Tokyo.”
“We want to celebrate with present, past and future members how rewarding it is to educate not only our preschoolers, but also our adults through Playcentre’s free NZQA approved adult education.” The training allows parents/whānau to manage and run their own centres, supervise sessions and understand child development and learning.
As well as gaining new skills Playcentre children and adults form friendships that can last a life-time. Wellington region Playcentre families are looking forward to meeting you.
